At Wednesday's "Let's Talk About Sex" forum, Deborah Chilcoat (above right), a Planned Parenthood of Maryland representative, spoke to students on various hot topics including positions and pregnancy.

Sex, often only discussed with close friends, can lead to urban legends about different erotic positions, sperm in pre-ejaculate, and possibilities of becoming pregnant. Wednesday evening's "Let's Talk About Sex" Q&A, hosted by a new campus club called Voices for Planned Parenthood (VOX), tried to put these myths to rest.

Deborah Chilcoat, a representative for Planned Parenthood of Maryland, started the discussion when she comically enlightened the crowd about what to do with a malfunctioning vibrator. "Well, if it shocks you," Chilcoat said, "take it to be serviced or replace it."

She continued the talk by explaining how pre-ejaculate doesn't contain sperm and how HPV, human papilloma virus, is the fastest growing infection among college women.

She also discussed the difference between emergency contraceptives, which should be taken as early as possible after unprotected sex within a 120-hour window, and the abortion pill, which should be taken earlier than 63 days after conception.

"The event enabled students to talk openly about medically accurate information," Chilcoat stated, "and to have a more educational and more universal discussion."

Student audience members enjoyed the presentation as they walked away knowing more about sex.

"Very good," freshman mass communication major Ope Ajelanke said, "I thought it was very informative."

With about 35 to 40 students in attendance, organizers said the Sex Q&A was a successful first event for VOX.

"For a kick off event, I thought the turn out was awesome. Also, the atmosphere was comfortable and casual, which was great," senior Emily Keaton, VOX vice president, said.

VOX, a club recently approved by the Student Government Association, currently has about 15 active members.

Samantha Kurtz, a freshman psychology major, recently joined VOX to help other students learn the differences between truth and myth.

"I like helping out," Kurtz said. "I also enjoy educating people about safe sex and the choices that women have."

Both Planned Parenthood and VOX "advocate for reproductive rights," senior and VOX President Nikki Smith explained. "Also we are a pro-choice group."

Planned Parenthood, located in Towson in the Loch Raven Shopping Center at 1714 Joan Ave. provides many services including testing for sexually transmitted diseases. Men and women can also receive education about various legal options including abortion or adoption, and receive extensive prenatal health care.

Since VOX advocates the principles of Planned Parenthood, now both will team up to help college-age students.

VOX organizers said they advocate the right of reproductive privacy and will continue to demonstrate their pro-choice voice on campus.
