After Towson University extended head coach Pat Mead’s contract on Oct. 15, there was every reason to believe that his swimmers would want to come out and prove that his extension was an excellent investment on Towson’s part. The women’s team did exactly that, winning all three of their meets this past weekend.
“We can’t do anything without him,” junior Meredith Budner said. “Every meet, that win is for us and for him because he is such a contributing factor.”
The women defeated East Carolina 163-137, Marshall 235-65, and Campbell 252-42, to sweep the four team meet held at ECU, and have now improved to 4-0 this season.
“Being on the road is a bit of a challenge, and our women did a much better job on the first half of the meet than what we did when we were on the road with William & Mary,” Mead said. “But again, the second half of the meet is really where the women stepped things up and took control of the meet.”
The team got off to a hot start when freshman Lee Ingram, sophomore Cari Czarnecki, seniors Jordan Crosby and Robin Glazer teamed up to place first in the opening event: the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:47.70.
Towson’s success reigned throughout as junior Brooke Golden led the Tigers with three individual victories. She placed first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:24.91), 200-yard butterfly (2:03.42) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:56.84).
Budner, who was named to the CAA’s 25th anniversary team last week, finished with two victories and a second place finish.
“It’s a great honor for her to only have two years of her swimming be evaluated and have her chosen as the top 25 is remarkable,” Mead said.
Budner recorded her wins in the 200-yard free style (1:50.38) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.04)
Czarnecki built upon her promising season by recording a first place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.22).
Junior Kayla Zeller and senior Jordan Crosby also contributed solid performances.
Both provided second place finishes of their own, while sophomore diver Caroline Baker placed second in both of her diving events.
Mead’s key to success is for his swimmers to not become complacent with the victories they record.
“People begin to just expect that we are going to win,” Mead said. “I’m constantly reminding our freshman not to take for granted the success that we had because I think that’s when you become complacent, and then you stop working, and then you start losing.”
The men’s team, on the other hand, has no reason to become complacent. They lost their lone meet of the weekend to ECU by a 199-88 margin pushing their record to 0-2 on the season.
Wes Foltz led the Tigers, recording a first place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.53) as well as placing third in the 1,000 yard freestyle (9:56.31). Diver Zachary Wolfe finished first in the one-meter diving event (237.85) and placed second in the three-meter diving event (231.65).
