Towson’s University Village apartment complex is a part of a unique fundraiser, which will take place on Friday afternoon when more than one-thousand bras will be strung around the reflecting pool in Washington, D.C. to promote breast cancer awareness.

The event, “Bras Across D.C.,” is sponsored by the Kane Show, as heard on the radio station, Hot 99.5.

Participants can donate a bra or make a monetary donation in support of breast cancer. University Village community assistant Shayna Price and assistant general manager Rob Cancelliere decided to bring the fundraiser to Towson this year for the second time.

After hearing about it on the radio, staff members decided to get involved once again.

“I think it is definitely a unique event. It’s not something you see every day,” Price said. “People write messages on a lot of the bras [when donating.] And if people have broken ones, they might as well donate them.”

Cancelliere also thought that it would be a way to bring the community in the University Village together for a good cause. Price said a Facebook event was created and sent to University Village residents. Cancelliere said that the coordinators also reached out to other students and community members besides the apartment residents. The University Village has a goal of doubling last years’ donation of 80 bras.

“This year our goal is to get 150 [bras]... If all goes well we’ll have 150. We hope to push the total over the edge,” Cancelliere said.

So far, organizers have reached 80 percent of their goal.

They expect more bras to come in by the end of the week.

A total goal of 1,600 bras has been established for the D.C. event and a progress meter is located on the “Bras Across D.C.” Web site. About 1,450 have been collected as of Tuesday night.

On Friday, the bras will be wrapped around the reflecting pool at the National Mall.

Several of the Towson volunteers will be in attendance wearing T-shirts they had specially made for the event.

Cancelliere hopes that the University Village can continue to participate in this fundraiser in the future.

“This is definitely going to be a yearly event for us. As long as they do it [in D.C.], we will too.”
