The Tigers placed 33rd out of 40 teams, despite placing first in their last two events, during the 36th annual Brooks Paul Short Run, held at Lehigh University on Saturday.

Towson head coach Roger Erricker usually stresses the importance of running as a team, but with 40 teams in the race it made running as a pack a difficult task.

“Because there were about 380 women in the race, a lot of the girls never even saw each other,” Erricker said.

Junior Brandi Gervais was the first of the Tigers to cross the finish line. She finished the course with a time of 22:10, which placed her 123rd overall.

Junior Lindsay Warfield made a great improvement on her 6K time by beating her previous record by 97 seconds. As the second Tiger to finish, her time was 22:26.

According to Erricker, Warfield has run well this season, and so far she’s been the most improved runner on the team. She worked hard in the summer, and now is putting up the results she has always been capable of.

“She just needed some confidence, and now she’s got it,” Erricker said.

Towson undoubtedly faced its toughest competition of the season. They ran against schools from the Big Ten and the South Eastern Conference. The Tigers hadn’t faced many big division schools this season, and to go up against a school like West Virginia (ranked fourth in the nation) was good for the team to be there, Erricker said.

“I looked at the results, and it wasn’t our best effort, but then again it wasn’t bad either,” Erricker said. “We beat some teams that we wanted to beat, and it’s always disappointing to lose to Delaware.”

Towson always looks to beat the Blue Hens, a conference opponent.

After Towson placed first in the Blue Hen Invitational on Sept. 19, Delaware got revenge by placing higher than Towson: 29th overall.
Erricker said his team needs to be “hungry in two weeks” when the Tigers participate in the Delaware Invitational. It will be held at White Clay Creek State Park, where the Tigers won the Blue Hen.
