After learning that they could not qualify for the CAA playoffs, Towson (7-11-2, 3-7-1 CAA) traveled to Fairfax, Va., Saturday afternoon, to conclude their season against the George Mason Patriots (14-4-2, 6-3-2 CAA). The teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half, but the Patriots erupted for four second-half goals and finished off the shutout victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak was peppered with shots early and often, making seven saves, and the Patriots outshot the Tigers 18-14. Ten minutes into the second stanza, Theresa DeLucca got Mason on the board by blasting a shot inside the right post after taking a crossing pass from Omolyn Davis. They didn’t waste any time extending the lead, as two minutes later Davis had two shots stopped by Papciak before the rebound was hammered home by Patti Benner.

DeLucca tallied her second goal of the contest with 29 minutes to play, placing the ball nearly into the same location as her first goal, in the right side of the net. Sasha Vido also found the right side of the net to be friendly, as her shot hit the post and bounced in just one minute after the third Patriot goal.

Freshman Katie Frey made six saves for George Mason in her 11th shutout of the season. The Patriots finished their season on an eight-game unbeaten streak, but they will not be playing in the CAA Championships, as they finished fifth in the 12-team league.

This was the final game in the storied career of Erica Marshall, who stands as the fourth-leading scorer in Towson history. She tallied 23 goals and 9 assists over her four seasons as a Tiger, including 21 points this season. Her offense, along with Kaitlyn Zamroz’s, who goes out as the tenth leading scorer in team history with 30 points, will really be missed. The leadership of Brittany Hadaway, Ashley Ventura, Danielle Rosanova, Phyllicia Rosselli and Sarah Thomas will also be missed.

The Tigers will bring back a solid unit on defense that should keep them in a lot of games next season, including Papciak and freshman standouts Alex Davis and Courtney Lupinek. Midfielders Annie HIllin and Cheyenne Skidmore might be able to team with Courtney McKee and Kaysi Ward to provide enough punch to get the Tigers on the board in 2010.
