Heading into its 50th season of college lacrosse, the Towson Tigers look to improve upon two consecutive winning seasons that ended in losses in the CAA and NCAA tournaments. Towson, led by seniors Brian Vetter and Jonathan Engelke, was picked to finish second in the CAA this season, trailing only Drexel.
Despite being picked to finish next to last in 2008 on the CAA's Web site, Towson has an optimistic view of the upcoming season. "We're picked to finish pretty low," outfielder Brian Conley said. "But we're looking to surprise some teams and finish a lot higher than they're expecting us to.
After a disappointing 6-9 record, including four one-goal losses, the Tigers must work to finish strong in the close games that led to the team missing out on the CAA tournament for the first time since 2003. Led by a trio of offensively minded juniors and a veteran goaltender, the Tigers look to return to prominence in the CAA in 2008.
As ice-cold raindrops poured from the grey clouds above and University administrators pondered the cancellation of evening classes on Wednesday, the Towson's women lacrosse team trickled into the locker room after braving the elements at an afternoon practice session.
When Towson travels to South Carolina for the College of Charleston Cougar Classic on Friday, the lineup will look different from last season. Despite returning 12 letter winners from 2007, the Tigers will open this season with seven players that are either first time starters or are playing a different position from last year.
