The Towerlight receives 16 awards

Every year the staff of The Towerlight submits our best work for judging in a variety of regional and national competitions. This year we are the recipients of 16 collegiate journalism awards.
Eight staff members received a total of 11 Mark of Excellence awards from Region 2 of the Society of Professional Journalists. And five staff members received five Gold Circle Awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
The Towerlight received four first place SPJ awards this year, compared to one last year. First place regional winners advance to the national level. At a conference in Richmond over the weekend, the following winners were announced:
The Gold Circle awards are a national competition. At a convention in New York last month, the following winners were announced:
The 16 awards are a significant increase over last year's total of seven awards.

- Breaking News Reporting: Sharon Leff for "Students camp out for Village housing" (third place)
- In-Depth Reporting: Sharon Leff for "Advising adds new steps to register" (first place)
- Feature Writing: Brian Stelter for "Fulfilling his duty to America" (first place)
- Sports Writing: Darnay Tripp for "Winston Rising" (first place)
- General News Photography: Patrick Smith for "O'Malley Wins" (third place)
- Feature Photography: Patrick Smith for "Jermon Bushrod" (second place)
- Photo Illustration: Patrick Smith for "Halloween" (first place)
- Photo Illustration: Patrick Smith and Matt Laumann for "Shaking it up in 2007" (second place)
- Photo Illustration: Patrick Smith and Jenn Long for "Five years later" (third place)
- Online Sports Reporting: Brent Kennedy for "Hot shooting Monarchs cool off Tigers, 85-71" (second place)
- Online Opinion & Commentary: Kiel McLaughlin for "The Hot Corner" (second place)

- Sports Writing: Terence Flyntz for "Schaefer's career night keeps perfect record intact" (certificate of merit)
- First Person Experience: Heidi Greenleaf for "New Orleans still needs help" (third place)
- Spot News Photograph: Patrick Smith for "Ferris wheel" (certificate of merit)
- Tabloid Feature Cover: Patrick Smith and Jenn Long for "Five years later" (certificate of merit)
- Information Graphics: Jenn Long and Mike Fila for "Apartment guide" (certificate of merit)
The 16 awards are a significant increase over last year's total of seven awards.
