The newest local contender in the a la carte hamburger genre of eateries is nothing for its competition to sniff at. Burger Bros., located at 14 Allegheny Ave., certainly has the goods that could give other customizable burger joints (Cheeburger Cheeburger, and Five Guys come to mind), a run for their money.

With always-festive poinsettias lining the windows and great classic rock tunes playing over the speakers, Burger Bros. has a great, inviting look to it.

While waiting for my food I wondered if the restaurant's founders actually had the last name Burger and they really were the Burger brothers. Turns out they aren't but the place certainly knows what they're doing.

Burgers are 6 oz. of fresh ground beef, grilled up after you order. I couldn't find anything to complain about with my cheeseburger and I have to say it was better than any of the burgers I've had at chain restaurants of the same concept. The patty was hand formed, not a pre-molded frozen beef patty (yes, it does make a difference).

I wasn't asked how well I wanted the patty done, but whatever they did, it was perfect-not too done, with just enough pink in the middle.

All of their sandwiches (turkey and grilled portabella mushroom burgers and grilled chicken breast are sandwich options) run between $5 to $7.

I felt Burger Bros. falls short in its number of options for toppings and burger size. But you needn't worry about going hungry as far as portion size goes and the toppings list is still impressive.

Topping options, which include six types of cheese and 13 different condiments and vegetables, are free. Chili, extra cheese, extra bacon and sautéed mushrooms will add less than an extra buck to your bill.

If the mood for a sandwich doesn't strike you, you can choose from a hot dog, salads or Buffalo wings (boneless or not) with six sauce options.

If you're hungry for more you can add fries or onion rings. The fries are fresh cut potatoes and are reminiscent of Thrasher's fries, for those familiar with Maryland's Eastern Shore.

There's also a bottle of vinegar at every table for you to douse your fries in. Wash it all down with fresh squeezed lemonade or an Arnold Palmer (half iced-tea, half lemonade) and you'll be full until tomorrow.

On a recent visit patrons were sparse, which is unfortunate since the little eatery has charm and fits in well with the other shops and restaurants on Allegheny Avenue.

Burger Bros. shouldn't be passed up for national chain burger joints in the area. So support local commerce and check this place out-you'll be making your stomach, and the Burger Bros. happy.
