According to student coordinator Jen Weber, the event raised more than $38,000 for the American Cancer Society. Additional donations are still being totaled.
Relay for Life is an all-night walk-marathon to raise funds for cancer research. Teams of walkers must always have at least one member walking the course. Team members not walking took part in dancing, free food, a moon bounce, or rested.
The three student coordinators for this event began planning it by gathering the support of the American Cancer Society, followed by establishing committees to handle this large event.
"Once we had the backing of the American Cancer Society we were OK. We've had some obstacles, but we were able to overcome them," Weber said. "The school and the American Cancer Society have both been very accommodating."
While serving as a fund-raiser for cancer research, the event is also meant to remember those who have been lost and support those currently battling the disease.
"In some way, shape, or form everyone is affected by this," Cali McCord, a sophomore, early childhood education major, said.
The Relay for Life motto is "remember those who were lost, celebrate those who survived and fight back."
"It's a different opportunity. It's not something you get to do every Friday night, and because of the personal ties to it, you can't help but participate," McCord said.
Asya Henriquez, a student coordinator for the event, said she was deeply touched by the event. She lost her grandmother to cancer and saw this as her chance to raise funds and awareness.
"This is the highlight of my year. It means so much to me. It is truly priceless," Henriquez said.
Event coordinators said they are seeking to host a Relay for Life annually.
The next Relay for Life event will be held at Goucher College on April 12.
