Three Tigers were handed suspensions this week by head coach Pat Kennedy stemming from an incident that took place following a late-night party in the University Union on Sept. 19.
As a result, redshirt freshman Rick Brown will miss the first five games of the season, senior forward Junior Hairston will serve a three-game suspension, and senior forward Tony Durant will be inactive for the season opener.
"The suspensions are in conjunction with the regulations of the university," Kennedy said. "They are in concert with our standard within our program."
After midnight, in the early hours of Saturday, Sept. 20, several fights broke out at the Black Student Union event that led to Baltimore County and Towson University police attempting to clear the building. During the evacuation, an officer tried to calm Brown, who was behaving inappropriately at the time. After a confrontation, Brown resisted arrest and marijuana was found in this pocket. Hairston and Durant are penalized for their involvement; however, it is unclear what role they did play in the incident. Neither face legal action.
Brown, who is charged with four separate counts of criminal activity, could face further legal discipline pending his trial set for later this month. The 6-foot-5-inch forward is facing up to four years of prison and $7,000 in fines for his four misdemeanors, which include resisting/interfering with an arrest, disorderly conduct, possession of marijuana, and failure to obey a reasonable and lawful order from a law enforcement officer.
Durant will return to action on Nov. 16 at Niagara while Hairston will not be available until Nov. 24 in a home game against NJIT.
Brown is expected to return Nov. 29 in a Hoop Group Classic contest against either Penn State or Rhode Island. Towson opens its season Nov. 14 against Navy at the Towson Center.
