“Obamacare,” as it is frequently called, is perhaps the most controversial topic in the media and throughout the United States today. Supporters say that it will allow the poor to have health care. The opposition says that it is the beginning of the government’s move to socialism. I believe that the move to a public health care option is a trend that I don’t want to see in America.

I don’t trust the government of the United States. I hate to say it, but it is a well known fact that most of our congressmen are indeed criminals. I would like to believe that we live in a society where our representatives follow the Constitution, where liberty and justice mean something, and where the people are more important. In reality, those are dreams that died with our founding fathers. I have a hard time trusting that these people will give me reasonable health care benefits. The less money that the government spends on you, the more money they spend on themselves. For some reason, I don’t see myself getting a fair health care plan.

As many of you know, the debt of the United States is almost 12 trillion dollars. The cost of the new health care reform is said to cost about $1.6 trillion dollars. If you know anything about the government, you know that they get money from taxes. There will have to be all sorts of tax increases just to pay for this new health care bill alone. I don’t want my future children or grandchildren to pay for everyone in the United States’ health care.

Countries such as England, Canada, Australia, Cuba, Finland, and Israel are a few countries that have “public health care” in place. My grandmother, receiving quality care in the United States, was forced to receive health care in England even with her chronic condition of rheumatoid arthritis. In Canada, also running with public health care, the median wait time in Canada to see a special physician is a little over four weeks with 89.5 percent waiting less than three months. She has to receive a special type of medicine every two weeks just to keep the disease at bay. If left untreated, this type of arthritis attacks joints, and makes it nearly impossible for hand and feet to function. As a result of the treatment in England, my grandmother’s hands and feet are unshapely and extremely difficult to use. I wouldn’t want to see my grandmother suffer any more from this illness, and I certainly wouldn’t want our government to be the cause.

Ridiculous. America has "the finest health care" in the world. We don't. Almost all advanced countries have better national health statistics than the United States does. We force 700,000 Americans into bankruptcy each year because of medical bills. In France, the number of medical bankruptcies is zero. Britain: zero. Japan: zero. Germany: zero. Oh and people live longer in those countries too.

@John I have had similar issues with the commenting system. Any sort of substantial/lengthy response is incredibly difficult to get posted.

@Corbett Your assumption that the country is "blindly" following Obama is incredibly misplaced. I too have my reservations about him; I am certainly no blind follower. Do not be so quick to judge those who disagree with you. Both sides could launch such claims-Supporters blindly following Obama, opposition blindly following AM talk shows etc. I think we all know it is not nearly so cut and dry and such accusations do no one any good.

John,

I too am tired of Barack Obama's "change." I agree with you entirely. It is a sad day when most of the country blindly follows.
Thank you for your comment.

Mr. Locke,
FYI, I am trying to post a more lengthy response, but for some reason it is not being posted.

@Your name Every media outlet could be accused of a bias towards some side. Please do tell, what are these more neutral sources? Besides, rather than simply ignoring information on the basis of its source, why not examine and debunk the information itself? I freely admit the Huffington Post and Daily Kos are on a whole biased towards the left, but that does not mean they are never truthful, never accurate, or never reliable.

On last item...The majority of the country is not in favor of healthcare reform.

Mr. Locke,
Your interest in the subject is also nice to see. However, please stop try and use more neutral sources when bolstering your opinion. I had previously engaged in a discussion with you, but I decided to stop when you started using sources such as the Daily Kos and the Huffington post, both extremely liberal web sites. I'd love to mash figured with you but your next move would probably be to start citing MSNBC's polls as fact.

@John You accuse Barack Obama of being a radical Liberal, but he is actually quite conservative by global standards. I see you parading claims of inexperience, fraud, and radicalism but can you provide examples of all of that? You speak about people seeing through his rhetoric, but what of the rhetoric of his opponents, let’s not cherry pick.

You are also incorrect in saying the American people do not want national health care. I direct you to two recent polls: http://pollingreport.com/health.htm and http://abcnews.go.com/sections/living/US/healthcare031020_poll.html More Americans want some form of national health care than those who do not.

Finally, in regards to Ronald Reagan, the claim that he was the greatest American president, or that he was all that far different than Barack Obama is just simply wrong. Ronald Reagan: increased spending to its highest since World War II, tripled the national debt, among other things. Please read http://daggatt.blogspot.com/2009/10/great-myths-of-ronaldus-magnus.html It is a very well written blog entry and all the claims made are sourced and easily verifiable. Ronald Reagan did achieve some things in his tenure in office, but he did not act all that different from current presidents, nor was he as glorious as he is often portrayed today.

I’ll leave you with a quote from the one of the men who influenced the Declaration of Independence, John Locke: “To love our neighbor as ourselves is such a truth for regulating human society, that by that alone one might determine all the cases in social morality.”

Here is a famous quote from the Greatest American President of all time. Unfortunetly, the majority of you reading this were not even born when he was in office....

"Government's first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives. "

Ashley, Im glad you had the courage to speak up about this topic. You are indeed correct, national health care is not something our country needs and by all polls, it is not something the American people want. Its good to see people are finally seeing through the nightmare that is Barack Obama and the Democrat controlled congress. I think the honeymoon is over for Obama and people now realize that there was/is no substance to him. He is a fraud just as his policies are. People finally realize that just because someone says what you want to hear doesnt mean that they agree with or can even come through with any of their promises. Obama has been exposed for the fraud, inexperienced, radical liberal that he really is. It just saddens me that it took so long and an election for many people to start seeing through his rhetoric. Again, I applaud you Ashley for speaking up especially in the liberal environment that is college.

To Mrs. Corbett,

You begin by citing health care reforms efforts as the most controversial topic in the media and United States. This is simply not true, while the media may portray that (and every other issue) as deeply divided and controversial, the majority of Americans are indeed in favor of health care reform. See: (http://www.pollingreport.com/health.htm). Supporters want more than to just allow the poor access, they want to allow everyone access. Opposition exists based on legitimate issues with the proposed plans and not just the baseless rhetoric of “socialism.” The arguments both for and against get reduced far too much, in an issue that is complex and can not be whittled into quick blurbs and talking points.

Also questionable is your extreme contempt for the U.S. government. Can you please cite the source where it shows the majority of congressmen are criminals? It is common to complain about the ineptitude of politicians, but they are voted in by us-the citizens. Our country, despite some despicable practices in its history, continues to uphold the Constitution. You have a tough time trusting the government with health care, but you are willing to trust the corporations? We do not elect or influence any aspect of the corporations like we do our government. Insurance companies have proven themselves expensive, unreliable, and incredibly fickle in their care. What wouldn’t be fair about a government health care plan, similar to Medicare, which exists for all people?

Yes, there will be tax increases. Taxes are an unfortunate, but necessary aspect of government. It is how the government pays for schools, repaving roads, our military, etc. We would all be paying for each others health care, so no one has to worry when they get sick.

As for your grandmother, she was “forced” care? Did she not want it? In Canada, most wait times for any major procedures or issues are considerably shorter. In fact most wait times, on a whole aren’t that bad. Anecdotal evidence is hardly conclusive, and notoriously unreliable. Her care would not be excessively worse under Canada’s or England’s health care systems. I’m sorry your grandmother must suffer from such a disease and wish her the best; I also wish the best for all the citizens of this country, which is exactly why health care reform is an imperative.

"I hate to say it, but it is a well known fact that most of our congressmen are indeed criminals."
Okay then, Ashley. There are 535 members of Congress - both the house and the senate. Please list for me at least 268 who are "indeed criminals."

Oh, and good to hear that you trust Big Business but can't trust the government.
